The Cure and Siouxsie & The Banshees Drummers Lol Tolhurst and Budgie Announce New Project, LXB

Hold on to your sticks: two post-punk drumming legends have joined forces and forged a new band. Meet LXB, comprised of Lol Tolhurst (The Cure) and Budgie (Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Creatures). Rumour has it, or at least the transcript from their joint interview on Sirius XM’s Volume channel, that this burgeoning supergroup could release its debut album before the year’s end.

The drummers appeared for World Goth Day on the Volume West show (with hosts Lyndsey Parker and AFI’s Davey Havok), reminiscing about the Bat Cave and the early days of The Cure and the Banshees. In addition to LXB, they also have plans for a new podcast called The Bleak End.

The project initially was conceived as a trio including Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets), and he may still appear on the record. “Initially it was the three of us that hung out and did some stuff, and then Kevin had to go and play with Bauhaus,” Tolhurst said. The record likely won’t come out until late in the year; Budgie and Tolhurst would prefer to wait it out until they can tour with it. “Obviously, so nothing’s happening on that front until next year,” Tolhurst lamented.

Budgie and Tolhurst, who met when The Cure opened for the Banshees on the Join Hands tour in 1979 — teamed up with producer Jacknife Lee, and have recorded 13 songs with guests that include Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and Idles guitarist Mark Bowen.

“Obviously, it’s two drummers, so it’s very, very rhythmic,” Tolhurst said of their collaboration. Budgie added: “It’s a real amalgamation of some early Cure and Creatures. It’s neither of those things in whole, but… it sounds very ‘the spirit of 77.’”

You can listen to the full 50-minute interview via Sirius XM, which is streaming for free through the end of the month. Search “Volume West” for past episodes, including this one, on Sirius XM’s site or app.
