Do you see the shadow of illusions we shared?
Stretched across the ground laid bare
I’m out of time so I shatter the glass
And feel the sand move over my hands

Yama Uba, the post-punk / darkwave endeavour by Akiko Sampson (Ötzi), has teamed up with Cult of Alia for a compelling rendition of the song “Shatter.” Behind Cult of Alia stands synth artist Dara (Creux Lies), who reimagines the track from a subtle slink to a self-assured stride. This collaboration celebrates embracing oneself and uncovering the mystifying truths hidden within.

Ever find yourself yearning for a vibrant dance party set in an ancient cavern? This take on “Shatter” perfectly captures that desire. Brimming with wild arpeggios, the haunting echoes of windswept synthesizers, and rhythms reminiscent of an archaic factory, the song weaves in some unexpected melodic twists. Topped off with piercing vocals that could slice through glass, this track masterfully balances introspection with the energy of a party potent enough to awaken the spirits.

In a world awash with ephemeral illusions and deep-seated regrets, the lyrics of ‘Shatter‘ probe the delicate balance of human fragility and resilience. Shattered glass and flowing sand paint a vivid picture of time’s relentless march, while references to porcelain skin reveal an inherent vulnerability. Faced with the deception of ego and a longing for true connection, one might recoil from the sting of malicious intent. Yet, buoyed by an unwavering spirit, there’s a rise above the empty jeers and taunts. Beyond its dance floor allure, ‘Shatter‘ offers a profound meditation on our shared humanity, marked by a resolute defiance against breaking under pressure.

Shatter!

“Dara and I have talked about collaborating since the inception of Cult of Alia, says Sampson. “We had a lot in common with our two projects that were, at the time, an outlet for our aesthetics that fell a bit outside of our full bands, Cruex Lies and Ötzi. Shatter was the first Yama Uba song that seemed to really suit Dara’s aggressive dance style for a remix, so working together was a real treat.”

“I’ve always been hooked in by Akiko’s voice in Yama Uba tracks and ‘Shatter‘ was no exception, so I delighted in the opportunity to layer them in with some of my own ideas,” adds Dara. “Their vocals for this track had a lot of power to them and yet still this mysterious ether about it that was a lot of fun to work with. Accompanied by a good amount of splicing and chopping of the main synth elements I’m incredibly happy with the end result, truly honored to be entrusted with this opportunity.”

Cult of Alia was founded by Dara in 2020 and released their debut album ‘Offerings’ in 2021 on Cold Transmission. Yama Uba was founded in 2017 by Akiko Sampson, and in 2020 was joined by Winter Zora (Mystic Priestess). Yama Uba’s debut album, ‘Silhouettes,’ releases on Psychic Eye Records and Ratskin Records in October, 2023.
